For us, embroidery is more than tradition. It is an expression of our lived experience in the valley, our relationship with nature, and our pride as Lambadi women.

Meet The Artist

Porgai

Meet Proud Mary artists from the Porgai Artisans Association. Based in the Sittilingi Valley of Tamil Nadu, the artists of Porgai revive the nearly lost tradition of Lambadi embroidery. With a vast stitch vocabulary of over 40 different stitches, Lambadi is a deftly executed art, done without prior drawing, and following the artist’s instinct around color and composition. Vibrant geometric patterns come together with mica mirrors and shells to create this fine folk art of Southern India.

In addition to their hand-embroidered textile art, limited edition fine art prints of Porgai’s pieces will be available on ProudMary.co - and each piece provides the artist with their first source of passive income.
