Traditional artisan economies have long rewarded production over exploration. The faster an artisan can reproduce what’s proven to sell, the more stable their income. Yet this model leaves little room for risk, experimentation, or creative growth - the forces that push craft forward and give rise to more original, higher-value work.

After years of commissioning original works from artisan artists, we’ve seen firsthand what dedicated creative time can unlock. But every commission comes with an outcome attached - a piece for our collection, a deadline, a commercial purpose. In the art world, by contrast, artists are funded without a predefined result, giving them the space to experiment, take risks, and develop their practice. It’s this process that leads not just to more work, but to more original, more valuable work - work that is art, not simply product.

The Proud Mary Atelier is a small step toward solving a structural problem - that artisan income is tied to output, limiting exploration before it can begin. Each grant creates space - not a sabbatical, but breathing room. Time to step back from constant production, to experiment, fail, iterate, and pursue ideas that may not yet have a clear outcome.
